The green walnut shell

Walnuts have always been cultivated on local farms in Tyrol. Belief and superstition were closely linked. Walnut branches were said to protect against lightning and ensure a good harvest.
But the walnut tree was also recognised early on in myths, sagas and legends. It was regarded as a natural pharmacy for all kinds of ailments. So it was that, in addition to the nuts and leaves, the effect of the shells was recognised - and began to be used.
The extract of the green walnut shell was initially used for an oil to darken the hair. When the preference for light-coloured complexions gave way to sun-tanned skin in Europe, a similar recipe was developed for natural pre-tanning of the skin.
Tiroler Nussöl was the first sun protection oil in Germany and Austria. Since the 1930s, the recipe for Tiroler Nussöl has been kept secret and continuously developed.
